Ever since hostages were taken in Munich, the Olympics have been political. Back when the Soviet athlete machine was in high gear the Olympics have been more about politics. And now the Chinese athlete machine has gone all out to ensure victory from hiring foreign coaches to making passports for their underage gymnasts to be able to compete.

The opening ceremony has always highlighted the hosting country's history and culture, but there were so many political messages in the Chinese ceremonies it was scary. Most of the "people" doing the routines were Chinese soldiers who have been practicing those routines for over a year, sometimes for 48 hours straight.

There were no lines on the field to help the people judge where they were. But I'm sure there was no message about, look how disciplined our people are, we can make them do anything, or we shoot them.

For the Chinese, it's not about the athletes. For the Chinese athletes, it's not about the games or the athletes, it's about making the state look good in the eyes of the world. It's not only about winning, it's about beating the US.

As of this writing we are behind in gold and total medals behind the Chinese. But it's all about the athletes.

There are plenty of international competitions going on throughout the year like the World Games and others that are for the athletes. The Olympics hold all the sports all at one time, and that's why it's such a big deal. And it's turned into a BIG DEAL. The Olympics have turned into a bigger commercial venture than Christmas.

BTW: Best opening ceremony - Quebec, when Muhammad Ali lit the torch.

These athletes have worked hard to prepresent their sport and their country. This event only happens once every four years. Get your focus off the politics and onto where it should be... on the athletes.
